Description

Sh2-82, also known as the "Little Trifid Nebula" or "Little Cocoon Nebula" is a nebula located in the constellation Sagitta, approximately 2 degrees south of the "Coathanger" asterism. It is an H II region associated with a reflection nebula, situated about 1100 parsecs (3600 light years) from Earth, at the inner edge of the Orion Arm of the Milky Way galaxy. The nebula's ionization is primarily caused by the blue main sequence star HD 231616, which has a magnitude of 10.1 and a spectral class of B0.5V. Infrared radiation sources within Sh2-82, including emissions from a protostar, indicate ongoing star formation. Radio wave emissions have also been detected from small sources within the nebula, further evidencing active star formation processes.
